Successful Women: Dr. Nancy Mramor

by Janet Tirk

Relaxation, children, wholistic healing, teaching, writing, lecturing and success depict Nancy Mramor, Ph.D.  As a licensed clinical psychologist in health psychology, which is a division of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Mramor, 40, has practiced in Pittsburgh since 1980 and with a wholistic approach since 1986.

Recently Dr. Mramor opened a new office at Station Square for her business, Inner Spacesrelaxation training for adults and children.  It is here that she pursues private practice, and a curriculum development program for stress management with elementary students.

Pittsburgh is where Nancy’s roots are.  She received her B.S. in elementary and special education from Slippery Rock State College and her M.S. degree in educational psychology from Duquesne University.  She is also a master practitioner of spiritual healing arts.  However, it was Saybrook Institute/Institute of Humanistic Psychology in San Francisco that offered the doctorate psychology program she wanted, conferring her Ph.D. in 1991.

As a psychotherapist, she uses a mind/body approach.  Dr. Mramor states, “The United States is the only country where traditional medical practitioners do no automatically treat the mind/body/spirit as a whole” She does.  The focus of her work is to establish a conscious communication between the mind and body.  She aids clients in communicating with their bodily symptoms by using the cerebral tools of guided imagery and hypnosis.

A woman of conviction bets the house on her theories

Nancy also takes pride in another aspect of her work.  “When I wanted to prove that TV education was the most effective media to teach stress management to children, I went to great measures to do it.  In order to finance the research, I sold my house,” explained Nancy.  Then, because of a mistake on the board that was involved in this project, the final realization of my program for stress management in elementary school age children was delayed for two years.”  Her program is now highly respected.  Last summer, she presented it at The International Conference of Behavioral Medicine in Amsterdam, Holland.

There is a growing contingent of wholistic practitioners in the Pittsburgh area.  To give these practitioners the opportunity to network and feel supported in their work, Nancy started a chapter of the Institute of Noetic Sciences earlier this year.  The National Institute’s goal is to promote education and research on the noetic sciences and the subject of human consciousness.  The Pittsburgh chapter meets at 7 p.m. each second Tuesday of the month at the Friends’ Meeting House in Oakland.  In addition to her private practice, during the school year, Dr. Mramor works as the school psychologist and individualized program of instruction coordinator at the Pittsburgh Intermediate Unit #2, Pittsburgh non-public schools division.  Summers find her teaching at Chautaqua Institute in New York State or working on special projects.

Busy, yes.  Stressed, no.  For according to Nancy, “I use a variety of techniques to remain controlled, i.e., meditation, yoga, and drawing from the strength of my own personal spiritual philosophy.”  The warmth she exudes certainly proves that she does.
