Find out more about the teleseminar or read on to learn more about habits and why they’re so hard to break the old, conventional way. Habits are the things that make or break you in life. The best seller, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, is a testament to the power of positive habits. But before setting new habits, we must often change the old ones. Old habits can sometimes be resistant to change because they are so familiar and a part of our lives. We need to make our habits good ones in order to achieve anything that we want to achieve inside of ourselves and in our lives. Habits actually form the person that we are in many ways. In order to change a habit we need to discover the beliefs that support the habit and hold it in place. Each habit is held in place by a belief or a series of beliefs that usually occur as an unproductive solution to some uncomfortable situation. For example, if you have been in an uncomfortable social situation or had a public embarrassment early in life, you may have decided that in some way, your self-image or sense of safety is threatened when you are out socially. You may develop a habit of eating or drinking too much in social situations in order to smother the decision that you made early in life. The truth may be that there is no real reason for the excessive behavior and that the belief that you are unsafe in social situations is mostly untrue. And yet, the brain holds to the belief, based on something that may have occurred many years ago. If you can look at the belief that supports the habit you want to change, you have a greater likelihood of making the change. You may or may not remember an original event or even a disruptive event that started the behavior, but you may be able to identify the belief. Some common beliefs that relate to habits such as smoking, eating, withdrawal, anger, excessive behavior (gambling, sleeping, drinking, television watching, addiction to the computer, overwork) include:
